Stylista vs fashionista

It takes more than a closet full of designer or trendy clothes and a love of shoes to make a true style maven.

Stylista vs fashionista is a new segment and this is the first installment. We will define what these terms mean to us in this post and subsequently we will post pictures of celebrities and you beautiful people will tell us via comments if the person in focus is a fashionista or a stylista.

 Who is a stylista?
  • Someone that has found his or her true clothing personality and dresses to suit her unique style.
  •  This person know what works for their body.
  • A stylista knows they don't need tons of clothes or shoes or new pieces to look their best.
  • A stylista keeps their look fun and fresh with personal touches
  • Does not have to break an arm and a leg to look good.
  • Do not follow any rule(s).
  • Knows that staple closet items are the most important pieces to own(see our post on staple closet pieces).
  • Are not trend whores but challenges trend through their unique style.
  • Knows that attitude is the most important outfit.
  • Takes risks and know "you win some and lose some".
  • Do not need to put any body part on display to look good.

Who is a fashionista?

  • A person who obsessively follows trends
  • Needs tons of clothing and shoes to look good
  • A designer whore

  • Does not consider their body type but just wears any outfit especially if it is trendy.
  • Looks at celebrities or runway models and copy their outfits verbatim without putting their own spin.

Polka Dot

Polka dot is a pattern that consists of an array of filled circles and dates back to the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom.

America's love affair with the polka dot began in 1926 when Miss America was photographed in a polka dot swim suit.
We could not find pictures of that Miss America so we will make do with that of Marilyn Monroe.
And the love affair continued with Mrs Obama spotting polka dot print outfits on different occassions.

We tried to find out when it became known in Nigeria but no luck(if you do know please let us know via comments).

As seasons come and go,polka dot never goes anywhere. It is a persistent trend,a classic in fashion history.

Polka dots are fun and delightful to wear for all ages.

Even Minnie wears it :)
As costume

You can find them on most things ranging from lingerie to shoes and on the runway.

Even men are not left out in the polka dot game :)

Polka dots can easily transform your dull look into a chic and slightly retro look.
They are one of the most eye catching and striking prints.
Vintage Closet does not believe in any fashion rule(s) so we won't post any rule(s) that guides doing polka dots though there are a few out there.

Polka dots  are the easiest to mix with other prints......mixed prints thingzzzzz
Over to you now, please send pictures of you in polka dot to vintagecloset9ja@gmail.com.Lets see how you styled it.
We have some polka dot pieces in our closet for sale...see contact details below

How to style an oversized blazer or jacket.

Boyfriend or oversized jacket as we would like to call it is a throwback to the 80s.It is now a must have and shopping for it is very easy as you can raid your boyfriend or husband's closet or just get a jacket or blazer one or two sizes more than your usual size.

The best thing with the oversized jacket is that you can wear it with anything from everyday casual wear to office wear and night on the town.

Below are pictures to inspire you on how to style this item that is fast becoming a staple closet piece.

(Pls don't style with the shoes above and the ones immediately above in 9ja except the weather permits which is not very often)

Very office appropriate,yay or nay?
